Motorhomes and Campervans Barred from Popular North East Spot Due to Anti-Social Behaviour
Motorhome and campervan owners now face new parking restrictions in South Gare, a popular area near Middlesbrough, following an increase in anti-social behaviour that has prompted action from local authorities.
South Gare, a small man-made harbour, has been overwhelmed in recent summers by vehicles that have caused damage, left behind rubbish, and disrupted the area. To address the issue, PD Ports, which oversees the peninsula, has installed height restriction barriers on South Gare Road to block larger vehicles from entering.
Growing Concerns Over Misuse
Frans Calje, CEO of PD Ports, emphasized the need to protect South Gare, describing it as a “local landmark” and an area of “outstanding natural beauty and wildlife.” He said the site has been treated like a “free-for-all” by people misled by wild camping apps and social media posts into believing it’s a suitable camping location.
Complaints from residents and tenants about inconsiderate parking and anti-social behaviour have poured in, with significant concerns about rubbish being left behind and vehicles overstaying their welcome. Emergency access has also been jeopardized, raising safety concerns.
Enforcement and Restrictions
To curb these issues, the new barriers prevent larger vehicles from entering, while CCTV cameras monitor compliance. Drivers who ignore the rules risk penalties. The restricted area includes Paddy’s Hole and the surrounding Teesside landmark, clearly marked as private land owned by PD Ports.
Emergency access will remain, and tenants and licence holders have been notified about the changes. The company is also working to clear abandoned vehicles, aiming to restore the area to a peaceful, well-managed state.
Mixed Reactions
While some residents support the measures, others express frustration. A social media user recalled South Gare being peaceful pre-COVID but lamented the influx of campervans leaving rubbish behind. Others criticized local authorities for not accommodating the growing trend of mobile holidaymakers, calling it a “national problem.”
Another resident acknowledged the decision was likely necessary, citing examples of motorhome owners taking up excessive space and causing disruptions.
PD Ports has reiterated that the decision was not taken lightly but was essential to preserve the beauty and accessibility of South Gare.
